Thanksgiving messages to be inclusive

While Thanksgiving is a national holiday known for coming together to spend time with friends and family, not everyone recognizes the same holiday. In particular, many Native Americans and Indigenous people observe the National Day of Mourning during Thanksgiving. This day honors Native resilience and protests against racism as well as the oppression of Natives.

In case you’re looking for ways to expand your audience and the people you include in your holiday wishes, here are some more inclusive Thanksgiving messages you can use:

  • This Thanksgiving, we invite you to join us in giving thanks. Gather with loved ones. We would also like to show respect to those commemorating a day of suffering and remembrance for their culture.
  • It’s the time of year where abundance takes the minds and hearts of many! Greetings and thanks are given out in mass. While we all have something to be grateful for, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge those less fortunate and recognize the Day of Mourning. To those who face adversity, we see you and support you.
  • Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude! We hope you are able to gather with friends and family to celebrate all the great things in life and prepare for another year of thanks. We’d also like to encourage you to take a moment to give back, as Native Americans are observing the Day of Mourning for their people. Give a little this Thanksgiving by donating to a shelter or charity, or, in true Thanksgiving fashion, participate in a food drive.
