10DLC Compliance: Why & How to Include a Self-Identifier in Your Text Campaigns

The first message of every text campaign must share your company name. Learn why and how to do that here.

What is the requirement?

As a 10DLC requirement, the first text message of every text campaign must identify the company you are texting from or on behalf of.

For example:

  • Hi Tom, this is Jen from Window Planet.
  • Hi Tom, Window Planet here
  • Hi Tom, this is the Window Planet team.

*Note also that the first text in every campaign must also include an opt-out option. Read more about the opt-out requirement here.

Why is this happening now?

As of July 6, 2023 all mobile carriers (AT&T, Verizon, TMobile, etc.) are restricting or blocking texts from unregistered 10DLC numbers. 10DLC registration requires your text campaigns to comply with the TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act), which is federal law, as well as CTIA Campaign Messaging Best Practices. Both of these statutes require you to reveal the name of your company in the first text of every campaign.

These regulations are in place to ensure a safe and transparent customer experience, and to protect your reputation.

Will you be modifying my campaigns?

No, we will not be modifying any existing campaigns (like we did for the opt-out requirement), as most Hatch users already self-identify and/or use our templates that include this.

However, if you create any new campaigns or make changes to existing campaigns, if the first text of that campaign does not include your company name using Hatch's [[Details Company Name]] snippet, you will see a warning like the one pictured below:

hatch message if no company is identified

How to add a company identifier in Hatch

To add a company identifier to your campaign in Hatch, you must use this snippet: [[Details Company Name]].

Note that the snippet MUST be included exactly as shown above—with the double brackets and each word capitalized.

These snippets will NOT work:

  • Window Planet
  • [[Company]]
  • [[details company]

Only this snippet will work:

  • [[Details Company Name]]

The [[Details Company Name]] snippet populates from the Account Name listed on the Account Settings -> General page.

Do I need to share my first name as well?

This is not a TCPA/CTIA/10DLC requirement, but many users tend to use a message like “This is [first name] with [company].  It's also what we recommend.

If you wish to add a first name to your text, you can either put a name directly in the text or use the [[User First Name]] Snippet.

The first name snippet must be exactly [[User First Name]] with the double brackets and each word capitalized.

This name snippet WILL work:

  • [[User First Name]]

These name snippets will NOT work:

  • User First Name
  • [[user first name]]

The [[User First Name]] populates from the first listed user on the Workspace Settings -> Team page.
